When the coolant in your car gets hot, it expands and creates pressure. This cap is designed to handle a high 1.3 bar pressure rating. When the pressure reaches a certain point, it will release through the cap's plunger into the overflow tank. Once the pressure drops, the plunger closes. This helps prevent your coolant from turning into steam and causing cavitation, which can damage your engine. As for maintenance, regularly check the cap for any signs of wear or damage.
